September 2014 - Diamond S Ranch and Daisy Fans –– Daisy, for those of you who don’t know, belongs to a lot of us in the Hyattville area. She is a Brown Swiss Dairy cow owned by everyone who drinks her milk. In Wyoming it is illegal to sell raw milk, but not illegal for folks to drink milk from their own cow - so folks buy a share in a dairy herd and pay the rancher to take care of and milk their cow!
Miss Daisy and Miss Hannah (both the milk cows) are feeling the fall like weather and the changing feed. Milk cows require really good nutrition and lots of it to keep milking, and when we get that first frost on the meadows you can see a difference in the milk, both in the amount you get and the amount of cream you see on top of the jars. We have just been milking Daisy recently. Hannah is a wonderful nurse cow, and Gene wound up needing a place for two calves this spring. I was hoping we could graft the calf Hannah had onto a heifer that had lost a calf, but the opposite happened, we wound up with two additional calves!. So, Hannah raised three calves all summer and they will be weaned with the others this week so our milk production will go back up!! I think that will be good news to all of us dairy shareholders, as I have been shorting everyone on your share of the milk lately, and I’m sorry about that, but we are getting all there is to get. We hope to make that up soon and have cheese and all the other great products to offer!!! As we get more interest and our demand becomes too great for Miss Daisy and Miss Hannah maybe we’ll add a third cow so we don’t have to short anyone like this year!
