September 2014 - Diamond S Ranch and Daisy Fans –– Daisy, for those of you who don’t know, belongs to a lot of us in the Hyattville area. She is a Brown Swiss Dairy cow owned by everyone who drinks her milk. In Wyoming it is illegal to sell raw milk, but not illegal for folks to drink milk from their own cow - so folks buy a share in a dairy herd and pay the rancher to take care of and milk their cow!
Miss Daisy and Miss Hannah (both the milk cows) are feeling the fall like weather and the changing feed. Milk cows require really good nutrition and lots of it to keep milking, and when we get that first frost on the meadows you can see a difference in the milk, both in the amount you get and the amount of cream you see on top of the jars.
We have just been milking Daisy recently. Hannah is a wonderful nurse cow, and Gene wound up needing a place for two calves this spring. I was hoping we could graft the calf Hannah had onto a heifer that had lost a calf, but the opposite happened, we wound up with two additional calves!. So, Hannah raised three calves all summer and they will be weaned with the others this week so our milk production will go back up!! I think that will be good news to all of us dairy shareholders, as I have been shorting everyone on your share of the milk lately, and I’m sorry about that, but we are getting all there is to get. We hope to make that up soon and have cheese and all the other great products to offer!!! As we get more interest and our demand becomes too great for Miss Daisy and Miss Hannah maybe we’ll add a third cow so we don’t have to short anyone like this year! To learn more about our cow share program please visit our dairy herd share page on our website, at this link.
Below is a notice from the Weston A Price Foundation about a program that has been shown on PBS several times this month. They share a new cheese recipe for us to try! So much to learn. Enjoy! At the bottom see sweet little Hyatt feeding his cow!

Good morning Real Milk Lovers:
I've been asked several times if we were going to show our Daisy Fans how to make Feta Cheese.
Well I have a batch that is ready for the final touch (Putting in the jars). There will NOT be a class charge as this will be very informal but I hope fun for us to be together sharing. There will be a limited amount of Feta Cheese available after we are finished.
Please join me and bring a friend if you like:
WHEN: Saturday morning TOMORROW
WHERE: Our kitchen
TIME: 7:55 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. (Have to leave by nine to make it to Skylar's VB game!)

Please let me know if you plan to attend. If this won't work for you but you are interested let me know that as well and I'll do my best to plan another for a different time.
